The Government of India reimburses ₹9.48 crore to Mizoram for ginger procurement

Aizawl: The Government of India has reimbursed ₹9.48 crore to the Mizoram Government towards losses incurred in procuring ginger from farmers under the state's price support programme, providing a boost to one of the country's leading ginger-producing states.

The reimbursement follows Mizoram's intervention to purchase ginger directly from farmers after market prices fell sharply, with the state bearing substantial financial costs to protect growers from distress sales. The central assistance is expected to partly offset these procurement expenses.

Ginger is one of Mizoram's most important commercial crops and has been identified as the state's Unique Selling Proposition (USP) under the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (MDoNER). The state has been pursuing a strategy to strengthen ginger cultivation, post-harvest management, processing and market linkages to improve returns to farmers.

Earlier this year, the Centre and the Mizoram Government launched the ₹189.79 crore Mizoram Ginger Mission, a convergence-led initiative aimed at sustainable cultivation and value chain development. The mission seeks to promote processing, value addition and exports while reducing farmers' dependence on the sale of raw ginger.

The state government had also earmarked ₹150 crore during 2026-27 for procurement of selected crops, including ginger, chilli, turmeric, broomstick and un-husked paddy, as part of its broader market intervention strategy to support farmers against price fluctuations.

The reimbursement comes at a time when Mizoram is intensifying efforts to develop a stronger ginger value chain through improved processing infrastructure and expanded market access, with the objective of enhancing farmer incomes and positioning the state as a major hub for premium-quality ginger.
