New Delhi: Even as geopolitical tensions in West Asia continued to raise concerns over global fertiliser supply chains, the Government of India on Friday told Parliament that timely planning, higher domestic production and close monitoring ensured adequate availability of fertilisers across the country during the ongoing Kharif 2026 season.
Replying to a starred question in the Lok Sabha, Union Minister for Chemicals & Fertilizers Jagat Prakash Nadda said indigenous urea production capacity has increased from 207.54 lakh tonnes in 2014-15 to 269.42 lakh tonnes (LMT) in 2026-27 following the commissioning of six new urea manufacturing units under the New Investment Policy (NIP)-2012.
The Minister said the six units, four developed through joint ventures of public sector undertakings and two by private companies, have added 76.2 LMT of annual production capacity. The plants are located at Ramagundam in Telangana, Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh, Sindri in Jharkhand, Barauni in Bihar, Panagarh in West Bengal and Gadepan in Rajasthan.
According to the reply, domestic urea production increased from 225 LMT in 2014-15 to a record 314.07 LMT in 2023-24. Production stood at 293.30 LMT during 2025-26. The Ministry also said the New Urea Policy (NUP)-2015 has enabled existing gas-based plants to produce an additional 20-25 LMT annually over 2014-15 levels.
The Centre also informed Parliament that the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) has recently approved the National Investment Policy for Urea-2026 for Aatmanirbhar Bharat (NIPU-2026) to encourage fresh investments in the urea sector. Meanwhile, two new projects, a coal gasification-based plant at Talcher in Odisha and the Assam Valley Fertilizer and Chemical Company Ltd project in Assam, are under implementation.
On fertiliser availability, the Minister said the Department of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare (DA&FW) assesses state-wise requirements before every cropping season, following which the Department of Fertilizers prepares monthly supply plans. Fertiliser movement is monitored through the Integrated Fertilizer Management System (iFMS), while weekly review meetings with state governments help address any supply gaps.
The government said fertiliser availability remained adequate across all states and Union Territories during the ongoing Kharif 2026 season, with supplies exceeding assessed requirements in most cases.
