Innovation, nutrition and sustainability drive BRICS livestock discussions

New Delhi: India, under its BRICS Chairship 2026, hosted a high-level dialogue on Advanced Livestock Technology and Feed Systems (ALT&FS), bringing together policymakers, researchers, industry experts and international organizations to discuss innovations that can drive sustainable growth in the livestock sector.

The virtual meeting, organized by the Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying (DAHD) under the BRICS Agricultural Working Group, was held from Krishi Bhawan, New Delhi. The dialogue focused on strengthening international cooperation in livestock technology, animal nutrition and resilient feed systems to support food security and rural livelihoods across BRICS nations.

The event witnessed participation from Union Minister for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying Rajiv Ranjan Singh (Lalan Singh), Minister of State Prof. S.P. Singh Baghel, DAHD Secretary Naresh Pal Gangwar, Additional Secretary Varsha Joshi and National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) Chairman Dr. Meenesh Shah. Representatives and experts from Brazil, China, Russia, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iran, the UAE and international organizations, including the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), also joined the discussions.

Addressing the gathering, Union Minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh highlighted the importance of the livestock sector in supporting rural economies, nutritional security and women's empowerment across developing countries. He noted that challenges such as feed shortages, low productivity, emerging animal diseases and climate change continue to impact livestock production and require innovative and sustainable solutions.

The Minister emphasized that stronger collaboration among BRICS countries can help accelerate the adoption of advanced livestock technologies and improve resilience within the sector. He expressed confidence that the dialogue would pave the way for meaningful partnerships and knowledge exchange among participating nations.

Minister of State Prof. S.P. Singh Baghel said the livestock sector remains a major source of income and employment for millions of rural households. He stressed the need to promote sustainable feed systems and technology-driven livestock management practices to address growing challenges related to climate change, animal health and feed availability.

Delivering the welcome address, NDDB Chairman Dr. Meenesh Shah highlighted the role of innovation and collaboration in improving livestock productivity and strengthening dairy and animal husbandry value chains. He underscored the importance of sustainable feed resources in ensuring long-term growth of the sector.

DAHD Secretary Naresh Pal Gangwar, in his opening remarks, described livestock as a critical pillar of food security, rural livelihoods and inclusive economic growth. He emphasized the need for scientific collaboration, quality animal nutrition and technology-led interventions to support sustainable livestock development.

During the dialogue, representatives from participating countries shared experiences and best practices related to livestock technologies, feed systems, animal nutrition and sustainable livestock management. Discussions focused on expanding research partnerships, encouraging innovation, improving productivity and enhancing food security while supporting rural communities dependent on livestock-based livelihoods.

The participants also explored opportunities for greater cooperation in areas such as feed efficiency, climate-resilient livestock production, disease management and knowledge-sharing among BRICS member countries.

In her closing remarks, Additional Secretary Varsha Joshi emphasized the importance of continued engagement among BRICS nations to advance livestock technologies, strengthen sustainable feed systems and promote collaborative research and innovation.

The dialogue concluded with a shared commitment among participating countries to leverage technology, innovation and international partnerships to build more resilient livestock sectors and contribute to global food and nutritional security.

As India continues to lead the BRICS agenda in 2026, the discussions are expected to support future cooperation in livestock development and help member countries address common challenges facing the sector.
