Telangana explores wider market access for rice in the Philippines

Hyderabad: Telangana is looking to expand its rice exports to the Philippines as the two sides explore ways to strengthen agricultural trade and build a longer-term supply relationship.

Telangana Irrigation and Food & Civil Supplies Minister N. Uttam Kumar Reddy met Philippine Agriculture Secretary Francisco P. Laurel Jr. in New Delhi on September 8 to discuss the possibility of increasing rice supplies from the State.

During the meeting, Telangana highlighted its position as one of India’s leading paddy-producing States, along with its large production base, modern rice-milling infrastructure and ability to supply quality rice in substantial volumes.

The Philippine side responded positively to the proposal and said it would examine the possibility of sourcing larger quantities of rice from Telangana. Further discussions are expected to involve government agencies, recognised importers, exporters and rice millers.

The Philippines is also seeking to diversify its international sources of rice supply, creating an opportunity for Telangana to strengthen its presence in the market.

The talks went beyond volumes and included several issues that will determine the feasibility of expanded exports. These include rice varieties, quality standards, pricing, procurement, logistics, certification and sanitary and phytosanitary requirements.

Officials and industry representatives from both sides are expected to examine these areas and work towards a practical roadmap for converting the discussions into actual trade opportunities.

The discussions also opened possibilities for other agricultural products. The Philippine Agriculture Secretary expressed interest in sourcing meat products and quality seeds from Telangana.

The State has highlighted its capabilities in seed production, food processing and allied agricultural sectors. The relevant products, regulatory requirements and export possibilities will be examined with government authorities and private-sector stakeholders.

For Telangana, expanding exports could create opportunities across the wider agricultural value chain — from paddy farmers and rice mills to seed companies, food processors and logistics businesses.

The State is positioning itself as a reliable supplier by leveraging its production capacity and processing infrastructure, while seeking more remunerative international markets for agricultural products.

The discussions therefore mark an initial step towards expanding Telangana–Philippines agricultural trade, with further technical and commercial consultations needed before larger export arrangements take shape.
