The National Academy of Agricultural Sciences (NAAS) organized a brainstorming session in New Delhi on 14th April, 2026 to develop a roadmap for achieving Atmanirbharta (self-reliance) in fertilizers. Representatives form various departments like fertilizer industry and farmers participated in those discuss and gave their opinions on the importance of Atmanirbharta in this critical sector.
After the session the President of National Academy of Agricultural Sciences Dr. M.L. Jat addressed the press conference. According to him India will achieve Atmanirbharta by 2047 and the agricultural sector will play a pivotal role in this journey. While fertilizers are very important to boost production but the main challenge is to stop the indiscriminate application of the fertilizers. Dr. Jat further added that our country consumes nearly 33 million tonnes of fertilizers annually, the maximum share of which is imported. Reducing the dependence on imported fertilizers has become a priority. He said that this issue needs to be addressed with short-term, medium-term and long-term strategies.
He stated initiatives like strengthening soil health, promoting the balanced and need based use of fertilizers and increasing awareness among farmers are essential steps which needs to be taken. It was also emphasized that there is a need to launch a mission to promote Integrated Nutrient Supply and Management (INSAM).
