    Manipur’s Black Rice “Chak-Hao” Exported to Europe

    He also flagged off vehicles carrying high-quality seeds for distribution to residents in various parts of the State affected by the destruction of poppy plantations by the government's 'war on drugs' campaign. 

    The CM tweeted, “The support extended by Govt. of India has enabled our farmers to export our products at a remunerative price. The people of Manipur thank Hon’ PM @narendramodi Ji for his unwavering support for our farmers.” 

    The CM also congratulated several sectors for their export and cooperation which helps farmers reach wider markets and buy local produce at good prices.

    These high quality seeds are being distributed to villagers of the state under the Alternative Seed Distribution Scheme of the Department of Horticulture and Soil Conservation of State Government. 

    About Black Rice: 

    Chakhao Amubi is a type of sticky black rice native to Manipur."Chakho" stands for delicious while “Ambui” means black. It is generally plated on special occasions and on event of festivals. After cooking, it turns purple from black and has a slightly nutty taste. Cultivation of black rice is believed to have begun when early Manipur settlers came here.

    It has a high proportion of antioxidants. Antioxidants can improve the level of immunity and help your body better prevent various diseases and infections. In Manipur, there are more than 4,500 hectares of black rice planted with a history of hundreds of years. Its high nutritional value and gluten-free nature, as well as its use for traditional medicinal purposes, make its market price in Imphal Rs.100 rupees, Rs. 120 per kilogram.
