Lac cultivation to be accorded agriculture status in Chhattisgarh

  • Date : 27 May, 2020

New Delhi: In a move that will benefit lakhs of farmers, the Chhattisgarh government has decided to consider lac cultivation as an agriculture activity in the state. Under the initiative, promotion of lac cultivation as a livelihood option for farmers, particularly those living in remote and forest areas will be carried out extensively.

A per reports, the Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh, Bhupesh Baghel on 25th May gave his consent to proposal earlier submitted by the state forest department for giving the status of agriculture to lac cultivation in the state.

Lac is a scarlet-coloured resin secreted by an insect called ''laccifer'' that makes its home on trees. The resin is scraped off from trees, dried and processed to form lac which is used in jewellery and leather industries. Chhattisgarh has ample opportunities for lac farming, particularly in its northern and southern parts which are densely forested.

Chief Minister has reportedly instructed the agriculture, forest and cooperative departments to present a proposal with mutual coordination during the next meeting of the state council of ministers to include lac and other such profit-yielding produces in agriculture.

While Lac cultivation is traditionally done in several parts of the state by farmers on a variety of trees but absence of modern and systematic ways of farming often leads to minscule profits against the investment.

Once lac farming gets the status of agriculture, farmers associated with its production would be able to avail loans via co-operative societies, like other cultivators.
