Vijayawada: The government has decided to issue 50,000 more agriculture power connections to farmers in the next two months. This is in addition to the existing 17.67 lakh connections across the state.

Energy minister Balineni Srinivas Reddy, at a review meeting held on Sunday, directed officials to expedite the process of issuing the new power connections. Enerdy department officials informed the minister that out of 6,663 agriculture feeders in the state, 5,200 are now capable of supplying free power with augmentation of feeders.

Balineni told officials to give top priority to supply of nine hours of free power to farmers. “Uninterrupted power to the farming sector will help in boosting productivity and will make agriculture a profitable activity,” he said, while asking them to be ready to meet the demand which is likely to increase from the month of February. “Increase in ground water levels this year may contribute to higher demand from the agriculture sector as more farmers may go for Rabi crop across the state depending on the rise in ground water level,” he added.

APTransco (Andhra Pradesh transmission corporation) has also taken up a Rs 286.3 crore project to upgrade the existing infrastructure of agriculture feeders, under which substations and other infrastructure works in East and West Godavari, Krishna, Guntur and Nellore districts will be upgraded. The government has already spent Rs 7,779.5 crore towards free power subsidy to the agriculture sector and Rs 475 crore for aquaculture to supply power at a subsidised price of Rs 1.5 per unit.

As many as 54,098 power connections have been given to aquaculture farmers across the state, officials said, while adding that efforts are being made to put in place a high-voltage distribution system with an aim to reduce distribution losses in agriculture sector by 25 per cent.
