  • Date : 23 February, 2021

Gujarat Government’s Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare Department has won two prestigious national awards, one under ambitious Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Yojna and the other for technological innovation in the agricultural sector.

The Central Government has announced the Best Performance Award under the Grievance Redressal Category to the tribal Dahod District under the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-Kisan) Scheme.

Similarly, FICCI has announced the Crop Area Estimation and Loss Assessment Award for Application of Geospatial Technology to the Gujarat Agriculture & Farmers Department.

Giving details of the awards, the state’s agriculture secretary Manish Bharadwaj said the PM-Kisan award has been announced on the eve of successful completion of two years of the Scheme for implementation in the States and Union Territories in three different categories. In all, 15 out of 718 districts have been selected for these awards.

The PM-Kisan Scheme is to transfer Rs 6,000 assistance to a farmer’s family through DBT in three equal instalments of Rs 2,000 every four-month.

Accordingly, the Best Performance Award has been announced for the tribal Dahod district for its performance in clearing 98.40 % (2087 applications of the total 2,121 application received) Grievances Redressal applications received online on ‘PM Kisan Portal’.

This award would be awarded to the state government by agriculture and farmers’ welfare ministry, Government of India, on February 24.

It is necessary to point out here that in order to ensure transparency in the benefits of the Prime Minister's Kisan Samman Nidhi; the Central Government has announced awards in three categories –- assistance payment completely based on Aadhaar-card standard, grievances redressal, and physical verifications.

The assistance, under this scheme, has been given to 2,26,743 farmer families of nine talukas of Dahod district.

Under this scheme, the Central government has also removed the restriction of providing assistance to the families having up to two hectares of arable land in the joint ownership of all the members of the farming family from June 2019 and has included all the farmers in this assistance.

In addition to this award, FICCI has announced awards in three categories namely FICCI Geo-Spatial Excellence in Governance, Geo-Spatial Technology Innovation and FICCI Geo-Spatial Excellence in Business Applications. The agriculture department of Gujarat government has received the award as the only government department in this award.

It should be mentioned here that Gujarat has been included as a case study in the report of the Department of Agricultural Cooperation and Farmer Welfare, Government of India on doubling the income of farmers for the use of state-of-the-art technology by the state government for the development of agriculture.

Previous to this award, Gujarat has also received the 'Best Agriculture and Farming Initiative Award' and the 'Digital India Award in Emerging Technology'.

The use of science and technology in agriculture has made farming a more profitable business. With the aim of doubling the income of farmers, the state government is also helping the farmers in using the latest technologies in the field of agricultural welfare.

Geo-spatial technologies such as satellite imaging, remote sensing, artificial intelligence and machine learning are excellent instances.
